Questions About Pathwell, Our Programs and How They Work
Pathwell provides practical education in healthcare navigation, patient advocacy, digital health and responsible artificial intelligence. Below are answers to common questions about our programs, student experience and educational approach.
General Questions
What is Pathwell Collective?
Pathwell Collective, LLC is an education and training company focused on healthcare navigation, patient advocacy, digital health and responsible use of artificial intelligence in healthcare-related navigation.
Pathwell develops practical education for patients, caregivers, advocates, navigators, healthcare professionals, nonprofit teams and organizations.
Why was Pathwell created?
Pathwell grew from firsthand work helping patients and caregivers navigate an increasingly digital healthcare system.
Patient portals, electronic records, telehealth, online information and artificial intelligence are useful tools, but they also create new responsibilities for people who were never taught how to use them safely and effectively. Pathwell was created to help close that education and navigation gap.
Who does Pathwell serve?
Pathwell education is designed for a broad healthcare audience, including patients, caregivers, advocates, navigators, healthcare professionals, nonprofits, community organizations and healthcare organizations.
Individual programs may be designed for a more specific audience.
AI Health Navigation
What is the Pathwell AI Health Navigation Program?
The Pathwell AI Health Navigation Program is a 15-module educational program in responsible AI-assisted healthcare navigation.
The program begins with the foundations of AI, privacy, verification, medical information organization and administrative navigation, then progresses into HIPAA application, ePHI security, professional scope, patient autonomy, clinical-trial research, health claims, care coordination, documentation and applied navigation cases.
Throughout the program, AI is taught as a supporting tool rather than a substitute for qualified healthcare professionals, authorized decision-makers or professional judgment.
How many modules are included?
The Pathwell AI Health Navigation Program contains 15 learning modules.
The program also includes required assessments, a Foundation Final Exam, a HIPAA Competency Assessment, a five-case Advanced Applied Practicum and an Advanced Competency Assessment.
Is the program online?
Yes. The Pathwell AI Health Navigation Program is delivered online and is designed for self-paced learning.
Do I need a healthcare background to enroll?
No. The program is designed to be useful to people with different levels of healthcare experience, including patients, caregivers, advocates, navigators and professionals.
The program teaches healthcare-navigation and responsible-AI concepts. It does not grant medical authority or replace education, licensing or professional requirements that apply to regulated healthcare roles.
Do I need prior experience using AI?
No. The course begins with foundational concepts, including what generative AI does, where it helps, where it fails and how to use it within appropriate boundaries.
The curriculum then progresses into more complex applications of AI-assisted patient navigation.
What is the Pathwell SAFE Method?
SAFE is Pathwell's repeatable framework for health-related AI use:
S: Strip Identifying Information
A: Ask One Focused Question
F: Find and Verify the Source
E: Escalate Decisions
The framework is taught throughout the program to help students approach AI use more deliberately and responsibly.
How Completion Works
Are there tests or assessments?
Yes. Pathwell requires learners to demonstrate understanding and applied judgment rather than simply view course content.
The program includes required assessments throughout the curriculum, a Foundation Final Exam, a HIPAA Competency Assessment, the five-case Advanced Applied Practicum in Module 15 and an Advanced Competency Assessment.
What is the passing score?
Pathwell competency assessments use a minimum passing standard of 80%.
Learners must also complete the applicable lessons, assessments and practicum requirements associated with each credential.
What is the Advanced Applied Practicum?
Module 15 is the applied practicum portion of the program. It includes five cases that require learners to apply skills from across the curriculum rather than answer isolated knowledge questions.
The cases address new diagnosis and information overload, digital access and caregiver support, denial and financial pressure, treatment choice and clinical trial questions, and complex situations involving several navigation needs at the same time.
Learners are expected to demonstrate appropriate professional scope, patient autonomy, privacy, verification, prioritization, documentation, escalation and responsible AI use.
What credentials are available through the program?
Learners have the opportunity to earn three progressive Pathwell credentials by successfully completing the requirements associated with each stage of the program:
1. Pathwell Foundational Certificate in AI Health Navigation Essentials
2. Pathwell HIPAA Certificate in Healthcare Privacy, Security & Responsible AI
3. Pathwell Advanced Certificate in AI-Assisted Patient Navigation
Each credential reflects the defined educational, assessment and competency requirements associated with that stage of the Pathwell program.
Are Pathwell credentials professional licenses or government certifications?
No. Pathwell credentials document successful completion of defined Pathwell educational and competency requirements.
They are not healthcare licenses, professional licenses, government certifications or third-party board certifications. They do not authorize a person to diagnose, prescribe, provide medical treatment or perform duties that require a regulated professional license.
Does the Pathwell HIPAA Certificate mean I am officially “HIPAA certified”?
The Pathwell HIPAA Certificate documents successful completion of Pathwell's healthcare privacy, security and responsible-AI educational and competency requirements.
It should not be represented as government certification, third-party board certification or as proof that an individual, organization, product, platform or workflow is universally HIPAA compliant.
HIPAA compliance depends on the specific organization, role, technology, agreements, policies, safeguards and circumstances involved.
Downloads & Ongoing Materials
Are downloadable resources included with the course?
Yes. Enrolled students receive access to applicable downloadable Pathwell resources through the student learning environment.
These include applicable checklists, worksheets, reference guides and other practical tools that support the skills taught in the program.
Are Pathwell resources updated?
Yes. Applicable student resources are reviewed and revised, replaced or expanded as healthcare technology, digital systems and responsible-use practices change.
Can anyone download the student resources?
The public Pathwell Resources page previews the types of tools available. Downloadable student materials are provided through the learning environment to students enrolled in the applicable program.
AI, Medical Information & Privacy
Does Pathwell teach people to use AI for medical diagnosis?
No. Pathwell teaches students to use AI as a supporting tool for appropriate tasks such as organizing information, preparing questions, understanding terminology, conducting structured research and identifying information that requires verification.
AI should not be treated as the authority for medical diagnosis, prescribing, individualized treatment decisions, clinical-trial eligibility, insurance coverage decisions or other decisions requiring qualified professional judgment or authorized decision-making.
Does Pathwell provide medical advice?
No. Pathwell provides education and healthcare-navigation training. Pathwell course and resource content is not individualized medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
Does the program teach HIPAA?
Yes. HIPAA, healthcare privacy and information security are substantial parts of the program.
Learners study protected health information, identifiers, de-identification, minimum necessary, patient rights, caregiver and proxy access, administrative, physical and technical safeguards, ePHI, secure communication, breach awareness and practical privacy and security decisions.
The program also addresses AI-specific concerns such as data retention, training use, connectors, recordings and the importance of reviewing the exact tool, account, features, agreements and organizational policies involved.
Students are specifically taught not to assume that every health-related app, AI product or digital tool is covered by HIPAA or appropriate for PHI.
Should I enter patient records or identifying information into Pathwell?
No. Students should not submit patient records, protected health information or unnecessary personally identifying healthcare information into Pathwell quizzes, forms or support communications.
Training and practice activities should use fictional or appropriately de-identified information unless a specific authorized workflow expressly requires otherwise.
Does Pathwell recommend one specific AI platform?
No. Pathwell focuses on principles and workflows that remain useful as individual AI products change.
Specific tools might be discussed for educational purposes, but students are taught to evaluate privacy, security, limitations, verification needs, data handling and appropriate use rather than assume one platform is suitable for every healthcare-related task.
Does AI replace professional judgment in the Pathwell model?
No. AI is treated as a support tool for tasks such as research, organization, preparation, drafting and information explanation.
It does not replace authorization, organizational policy, verification, professional judgment, qualified clinical or legal decision-makers, insurance determinations or appropriate escalation.
How the Organizations Relate
Is Pathwell part of Islands Against Cancer, Inc.?
No. Pathwell Collective, LLC and Islands Against Cancer, Inc. are separate organizations with different structures and purposes.
Pathwell grew from firsthand experience gained through patient advocacy and healthcare-navigation work, but it operates as an independent education and training company.
Does Islands Against Cancer purchase Pathwell training?
No. Islands Against Cancer does not purchase services or training from Pathwell.
Pathwell may provide applicable training to Islands Against Cancer without charge in support of volunteer education and patient-navigation readiness.
